Evaluation of the quality of domestic wastewater treatment using bioindicators

We characterize microorganisms present in the oxidation ditches of a domestic wastewater treatment plant. The underlying purpose is to evaluate the adequate operation of the treatment process and the quality of the water that is discharged into the receiving body, in this case, the Reconquista River. To achieve this objective, a series of assays were conducted, including measurements of sludge sedimentation, suspended solids content (TSS), chemical oxygen demand (COD), 5-day biochemical oxygen demand (BOD5), dissolved oxygen, pH, among other parameters of interest for study. Additionally, observation of the mixed liquor under a microscope was performed to quantify the microorganisms present in the biological treatment and their relationship with effluent quality, aiming to establish control measures using biological indicators.
